A Back to School Tale (or The Day I Fought My Teacher)

This week, our town went back-to-school, and being a teacher, I joined right in. As I watched the first day of school hubbub, I couldn't help but remember my own first day, twenty-fve years ago.
My sister, cousin, and me, blissfully enjoying life before school.
I was as ready as I could have been. New clothes, a Holly Hobbie lunchpail, a backpack too large for my little body. All summer I had looked forward to this day, which is why––I am sure––no one knew what was coming. Not even me.

My mom held my hand, and together we walked across the playground toward the kindergarten classroom. In the doorway stood Mrs. Gomes ready to greet us and welcome me into her class. As we moved closer, my excitement began to fade, and in its place surfaced slight panic. And then desperation. I grasped my mom's hand tighter, feeling my tiny five-year-old heart beat inside my chest. The closer we edged, the more my stomach looped itself into knots. We were only a couple of steps away, just seconds from crossing the threshold, and I knew: I was not going to let go. At the very least, I was not going to let go without a fight.

What should have been a simple pass-off (mom gives me a kiss good-bye, I bounce into my new classroom) turned into a screaming, flailing tantrum. I clung to my mom's shirt, sobbing, begging her not to leave me. When my teacher attempted to pull me away, I gave her everything I had. I kicked her, scratched her, and bit her. But despite all my effort (and believe me, it was valiant), Mrs. Gomes managed to separate me from my mom, and somehow in all that chaos, I was put in the closet.

Yes. A closet. A dark, dusty, dungeon of a place. (Actually, it was the tiny room where the teacher curriculum was stored, and it even had a small window. But still.) Mrs. Gomes put a chair in there, said I could come out when I was ready to be a kindergartener, and closed the door.

I don't remember much from kindergarten. Bits and pieces, really. I remember nothing else at all from that day, not even mom coming to pick me up. But I remember the fight, and even more clearly, I remember sitting in the closet.

I stared at the window and thought, I will never come out. Never ever ever. And I will never forgive my mom. Never ever ever.

The thing is, though, it's boring in a curriculum closet. And lonely. And I could hear voices of kids in the classroom, and they seemed to be having an all right time. So I wiped my tears, stood up, and opened the door. I was ready to be a kindergartener.

Mrs. Gomes acted like nothing had happened, just welcomed me into her class. And wouldn't you know I loved my first year of school.

We'd love to hear from you! Share your or your kid's first day/back-to-school stories. (They don't have to be this violent!)

7 FUN & FREE Back to School Printables!

Lately it seems like cute printables are popping up everywhere, which, by the way, is pretty awesome! As we head back to school and you prepare your little (and big) ones for a change in schedule, here are some of my favorite printables to make an easy transition and document some of those first day memories!
1. Positively Splendid shares a first day and last day interview for grades preschool through twelve. She has great questions with a spot for a photo. You can put it right into their memory box and bring the first day interview out at the end of the year and see how much they've grown!
2. Anything but Perfect shares printable prewritten notes for tardies, absences, lunch money, and much more. Just print them out, keep a stack on hand, and fill out when in a hurry!
 3. Family Fresh Cooking shares these sweet lunch box notes!
4. Meet the Dubiens give us two super cute lunch box goodies–printable notes for you to fill in with lovies, and a printable with lunch box ideas for you to pin to your fridge and reference during the year!
5. Kiki and Company shares lunchbox laughs–she has an entire series that can be downloaded off of her website! These are creative and funny and will keep your little ones laughing!
6. Paper Coterie shares a whole series of notes for school days, including reminders, love notes and coupons good for treats on special days!
7. Classy Clutter shares a series of printable signs for the kids to hold the first day of every grade while you take their picture! I love the chalkboard style of these! (If you haven't taken a photo this year, this would be great, or download and use them next year!)

I don't have kids in school- but I still printed out the lunch ideas and put them in my magnetic frame to keep on hand! Love this!

So what do you think!? Are there any printables here that you would use? Have you found anything else for back to school week to help with the transition?

Follow us on Pinterest here to see all of our back to school pins, including those listed above.

How to Survive Back-to-School Week! (Five Tips!)

This week many of us are swapping out summer loungewear for school clothes as the back-to-school frenzy begins! So today, we're bringing our top five ways to survive (and maybe even enjoy!) the B2S rush.

1. Tackle the morning in 20 minutes–and do it the night before! That's right, set a timer for 20 minutes in the evening, and get to it, team! Pick out clothes, make lunches, preset the coffee maker, line up the bags. Do as much as you can before the timer dings. There's something about a clock tickin' that gets us motivated and keeps us from dawdling! And 20 minutes? That prevents overkill and feels doable. Try it–your mornings will thank you.

2. Designate the drop-off zone at home. Bags are usually hanging off of every bone when we walk through the door. Decide where they go, along with papers and any other items, so an untidy pile doesn't breed more mess.

3. Unwind with activity. It is tempting...oh so tempting...to get home from school and collapse into a coma sit on the couch. A better option is to do something simple, yet active. Take a short walk, play with the dog, go for a swim. Get everyone moving together, but keep it light!

4. Have a fabulous after-school snack ready to assemble, like these peanut-butter banana bread sammies here. Toasted banana bread filled with creamy peanut butter, perfect with a glass of milk!
5. Order pizza on Friday night. Because you deserve it, and you did it!

We want to hear from you! What are you doing to make this week stress-free and even fun? Any tips to add?

Afternoon Snack: Peanut Butter Banana Bread Sammies!

Toast two 1/2 inch thick slices of banana bread. (You can do this in your toaster or in the oven.) Let cool slightly, and generously spread peanut butter on one. Get creative and add chocolate shavings, a drizzle of honey, or extra chopped nuts! Top with the second toasted slice, cut, and serve!

Use your favorite banana bread recipe, or use mine. But beware: this recipe just may replace the family recipe you love!
Best Banana Bread

5 ripe bananas
1/2 cup melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs

1 1/4 cup flour (I like half wheat and half All-Purpose)
1/2 cup bran
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
Dash of cinnamon
1/4 cup sliced almonds
1 tablespoon turbinado sugar

In a microwave safe dish, heat bananas for 1 to 2 minute to release the liquid. (If there is a lot of liquid, you can strain it into a saucepan and reduce, then add back in.) Mash bananas and put in large bowl. Add vanilla, melted butter, and eggs and mix well. Add the rest of the ingredients except almonds and turbinado sugar. Pour into a well-greased bread pan, and top with turbinado sugar and sliced almonds. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes to an hour, rotating halfway. Let cool.

Tip: Frozen bananas work for most recipes, so when that sad brown banana isn't being chosen for breakfast anymore, peel it and freeze it in a container. Once you have five, you're set to defrost them and follow the recipe as directed.
