Our Favorites: September Edition

STEPHANIE'S FAVES
1. Urban Decay Lip Junkie Lipgloss in Wallflower - I am a bit of a lipgloss addict- and by 'a bit' I mean HUGE! I love this gloss- it has great color, it's not too sticky, and it has a nice minty tingle effect to add a little plump!
2. Lollia Wish Hand Cream - I LOVE this hand cream! It is the perfect amount of silky and fragrance and goes on so smoothly! It is a bit pricey at $24, but you only need a pea size and it lasts quite a while. Find it locally at the Bravo Farms gift shop.
3. Alarm Clock HD App for iPhone - This is one of my favorite and most used apps. When I got my iPhone (6 months ago, about 3 years after the rest of the world), I started charging it on my night stand every night. Well that, along with two baby monitors, a lamp, an alarm clock, and my Kindle charger created WAY too many cords and plugs. I searched and found this app and was able to eliminate my digital alarm clock. You can set the app to stay on (make sure your phone is plugged in though or your battery will drain), you can set the color of the numbers, the brightness, add an alarm, set the music for the alarm to music from your iPhone, and you can even get weather and social media updates if you'd like. Definitely a great app!
4. Duck Dynasty - I have been a fan since season 2 of this show and if you aren't, you need to be! It is a hilarious, clean show (one of the few left on TV) that follows the Duck Commander family and business. I was HYSTERICAL watching this episode! Do you watch?
5. Baskin-Robbins Tuesday night cheap scoops - Almost every Tuesday you will find my family at Baskin-Robbins for cheap scoop night. It's the start of a busy few days for our family and we want to get a fun night in with the girls before things pick up. Regular scoops are $1.69, kids' scoops are $1.29, and if you buy a double you get a free waffle-cone at the location on Walnut-...which is plenty enough reason for me to get two scoops! (I know Mooney and Walnut locations participate; please check with other locations first).

CANDACE'S FAVES
1. Glassed Over Candle in Honeysuckle Sage - I discovered these candles while staying in Avila Beach and could not get enough of their interesting jars (made from recycled wine bottles) and intoxicating scents. Even though they're out of SLO, they just opened their online shop!
2. Sally Hansen Nail Growth Miracle in Fearless Fog - This polish is fantastic, and the color is perfect for Fall!
3. Loreal EverCreme Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner - I purchased these hair products on a whim, interested by their sulfate-free makeup. I love them! No kidding, I received more compliments on my hair the week I began using them than I had all year!
4. McConnell's Ice Cream in Salted Caramel Chip - If you've been reading my posts, you know I'm a sucker for salted caramel. I don't mean to sound dramatic here, but this ice cream is to die for. I've been enjoying a scoop (...or more) at char-cu-te-rie.
5. 642 Things to Write About - 642 topics to write about, ranging from "an email you inadvertently sent to someone who wasn't supposed to see it" to "Write about something you know absolutely nothing about. Make it all up." This is too fun. Hopefully I'll get to share a piece or two with you soon!

What are your faves this month?

Just Between Friends Consignment Sale- 10 Tips and everything you need to know!

Just Between Friends––have you heard of it? If not, and you are a momma/daddy, expecting momma, grandma/papa, nanny, day-care provider, aunt or are involved with children in any way, then you should know about it! Visalia's sale is THIS weekend, so get ready!

JBF is a HUGE children's consignment sale held twice a year right here in both Visalia and Fresno. When I say HUGE, I am absolutely not exaggerating.

For the sale, these items are actually being sold by people like you and me, so it is truly consignment. If it doesn't sell, the owner either picks the items back up or donates them to charity. Because of that, the deals are amazing. Most of us consigning are just trying to clean out our little ones' closets to make room for the next season, which motivates us to price things to sell. You can get items 50-90% off of retail! In addition, you can really pick and choose how much you want to spend, because multiples of the same item will be different prices and conditions. Maybe you want the cheapest item and don't care that it is a little more worn: you can pick that one out of the bunch and only pay $5. If you want something in better condition, pick that one out of the bunch and pay a little extra. It's totally your call!
But don't think this sale is only for toys and clothes! You can find just about anything you need for your kids, babies, toddlers and pregnant friends! You can even find brand new craft supplies!
So now that I've convinced you that this is something you will want to be a part of, you're wondering just how you do that!?

There are three ways to get involved:
1. SHOP-
This year the sale is being held at the old Ross building at the Sequoia Mall.
Saturday, Sept. 28
4:00pm Prime Time Shopping - $10 entry fee per person - children & strollers are permitted at this time
5:00pm - First Time Parent/First Time Grandparent/Military PreSale - must register on our website.

FREE ADMISSION- OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Sunday Sept. 29, 9am - 7pm
Mon-Thurs, 10am-7pm
Friday Oct 4th, 10am-8pm
Saturday, Oct 5, 10am - 3pm - 50% Off Sale!
Gymboree outfits I picked up at last years sale for $5 each!
2. CONSIGN-
If you miss out this season, there is another chance to consign in the Spring. Head to JBF website for all of the details. Drop off for Fall is Thursday 9/26 and Friday 9/27. You get to price, tag, and sell your items and earn 65-70% of the sale price, sent to your house in a check just a few weeks after the sale is over. If you consign, you get into the sale early at 2pm on Saturday, Sept. 28!

I have been consigning and shopping for the last three years!
Here I am shortly after my daughter was born in 2011 waiting to get in to the 2pm consignor sale!
3. VOLUNTEER/BARTER-
There is still time for this. Visit their Facebook page and contact Laura to see if there is anything else she needs. Volunteering and bartering for items will get you into the sale earlier on Saturday and could earn you an extra 5% on your sales!

Or DO ALL THREE!

And if you are going to shop, here are a few tips you'll want to know!

1. Bring something to carry your items in. The Visalia/Tulare sale will often provide you with an IKEA blue bag to carry around while shopping, but if you're like me, that will practically be dragging on the floor within 30 minutes of walking through the door. If you bring something to carry your items in, they will tag it at the door so they know it is yours. Here are a few things I've seen.
  1. A stroller- whether your bring your child or not, bring a stroller. It is easy to wheel around and load items in and on top of while shopping.
  2. A wagon- we have the Step2 plastic wagon that we bring every time. It is big enough to carry some larger toys and still have room to load up with clothes. Also, ours has a cup holder which is great for that bottle of water I am going to tell you to bring :)
  3. A rolling shopping cart/carry cart- do you have one of these for work or school? It's another great option to free up your hands and not break your back.
  4. A laundry basket- this is totally a JBF thing, I had never seen it before. If you don't have any of the other carriers on hand, bring a laundry basket, we all have one of those! To make it a bit easier, loop a belt around it to drag it along behind you!
  5. Any sort of bin and rope- Look at that fancy contraption- you know she is a JBF regular!
2. Bring Water. The weather is often unpredictable and it can be really warm in the building. Bring something to hydrate yourself.

3. Wear COOL clothing. This goes with the last one, there are a lot of bodies at the sale, making it extra warm at times.

4. Don't try to rush in and out in 10 minutes. If you consign and get into the presale, you should expect to spend 1-2+ hours there. Not only is there a TON of stuff to look through, but the line can get long to check out, you will need to be patient.

5. Take your time. This obviously goes with the last one, but when it comes to the clothing, toys, dvds, etc., you will want to take your time and really look through things one by one. This can often be tedious, but it will be the best way to find the best items.

6. Look at the return racks around the sale. There are return racks around the clothing aisles. Look through those racks to find items that others have already pulled and are just waiting to be sorted back into the main racks.

7. Look over things before purchasing. I will say that JBF volunteers are really great about pulling any stained items that might have slipped through, but take one last look before you purchase, especially if things are packaged in multiple items. 99% of the time, I don't have any issues. Once I had a shirt with 3-4 holes in-between two other shirts, and once there was a DVD without the actual DVD in the case (thankfully a JBF volunteer caught this one at the register!). If you are buying DVDs, ask them to open them at the register to be sure. If the item is in there, you can buy it and if it isn't, it needs to be taken off the floor anyway.

8. Make a list of items you need and your sizes. I can't tell you how many times I get into the sale and the list of things I want to buy fall right out of my head as I run around like a crazy person with no idea what I am doing all of a sudden. Make sure you know your kids clothing and shoe sizes as well. Also, write that list in order of importance. Things can go quickly, so if you absolutely need a walker or diaper bag, go there first, pick it out and take it to the hold section if you don't want to carry it around.

9. Just be aware that big items always go first. Outdoor toys, playhouses, kitchens, bikes, furniture, then the larger toys, walkers, swings, and shoes- All are hot ticket items. I usually start with bigger items I know won't last long, then end with the toys and clothes.

10. Be nice! Seriously, everyone is there for the same reason. Be courteous of others shopping and volunteering.

Whew! So, there you have it! Do you shop at JBF? Any tips for other shoppers or volunteers?

And don't worry, if you aren't one of our local readers, head to their website and search for a sale near you!

Unless my own, images are from JBF Visalia/Fresno Facebook site.

Local Highlight + Giveaway: Twig & String {Crochet Patterns, Classes, and Accessories}

Today, we're thrilled to be featuring Stephanie from Twig & String, a talented designer and creator of crochet patterns. (And one of the sweetest people we know!)
Tell us about the gal behind Twig and String!
My friends call me Steph. I am a wife and mother of 2 kids, 2 small barking dogs, 2 bunnies, and a wild mouse that I think might live in our piano. I crochet as much as I can and wherever I can. One time I found an uncooked noodle in my project bag--evidence of crocheting in the kitchen...while cooking dinner!
What can we find at Twig & String?
Currently you can find digital crochet patterns and Tunisian crochet patterns for accessories such as scarves, wraps, and hats at my Etsy shop Twig & String. I am working on expanding my amigurumi patterns (crochet toys) section, too.

How has Twig & String changed over the years?
When I opened my shop on Etsy in 2011, I sold finished crocheted accessories (scarves and wraps mostly) that I designed myself. Although I absolutely loved making these things by hand and shipping them off across the U.S., I found that I was running out of time to design new items, which was my favorite part of the process. About 6 months after my shop opened, I decided to change directions and start selling my designs in the form of patterns. This was such an exciting change for me! I now have tons of unfinished projects just waiting for the right inspiration for me to finish them up, work out the pattern, and put them up in the shop for you.
What does your week look like as a shop owner?
I have to make goals for myself or I would spend each day doing nothing but crocheting. If I’m really into a project I will work on it in short spurts through the day. Finish a load of laundry: 5 minutes crochet; unload the dishwasher and help kids with homework: 5 minutes crochet; etc. If we have time for a show or movie at night you can count on me crocheting through the whole thing...which drives my husband nuts!

What is your inspiration for creativity?
Most of the time my inspiration comes from the weather and change of seasons. I'll fly through pages in my sketch book at the beginning of a new season and then spend the rest of the season trying to actually crochet what I've drawn. (Sometimes this is a very hard task since my 6 year old can draw better than I can). Right now I'm totally inspired by my kids, so I've been designing some amigurumi (crochet toys) pieces that I hope to release before Christmas.
What’s playing on your iPod?
The Weepies, Lenka, The Civil Wars

Something I couldn’t live without is...my family! And obviously my twig and string (hook and yarn!).
You may be thinking that you LOVE all of Twig & String's designs, but you don't know how to crochet! Don't worry! You can gather a few friends together and Stephanie will personally teach you! (In fact, we Citrus and Cream gals are signed up for a class this month!) Contact her at twigandstring@gmail.com. You can also ask her about custom pieces, which she'll crochet and send your way!

Steph has made it easy for us to stay connected with her. She has a great website (where she often posts free designs!) and is sharing all of her patterns and crocheted loves on Etsy, Craftsy, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and Ravelry!

Stephanie has generously given us TWO of her finished products for a giveaway, perfect for the cooler weather that's headed our way: a braided infinity scarf in charcoal (wear it long, or double it up for extra warmth!) and a beautiful autumn leaves cowl in rust. Enter both giveaways below.

Plus, she's offering 35% off all patterns through the end of October! Simply enter the code citrusandcream at checkout.

Best Salted Caramel Sauce (Ever!)

Recently Steph was commenting to me how funny it is that everything on Pinterest is the best. Best chocolate cake recipe. Best quick cleaning tips. Best way to to lose a few pounds. We get it though, right? Who wants to pin "Mediocre Lasagna" or "Just Okay Cupcakes"?

But trust me, the caramel recipe I'm sharing today truly is the best. Seriously. It's warm, buttery, and slightly salty. And it opens up a whole new world of delicious treats: caramel popcorn, caramel cookies, caramel lattes, caramel apples...a few of which we'll be sharing very soon!
Salted Caramel Sauce (adapted from Cooks Illustrated)

Ingredients:
1 cup water
2 cups sugar
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3 T butter
2 teaspoons sea salt
Directions:
1. Put water and sugar in a stainless steel saucepan, then cover and bring to a boil. Once boiling, uncover and insert a candy thermometer. Continue boiling until the mixture starts to have some color and reaches 300 degrees F. This should take about 10 minutes, but start checking it at 7.
2. Meanwhile, pour the cream and vanilla into a small saucepan, and bring to a simmer. Turn off once simmering.
3. Reduce your sugar mixture to medium heat and watch it carefully until it turns an amber color and registers 345 degrees. Watch carefully, as the temperature can climb quickly!
4. Take it off the heat, and carefully add in 1/4 cup of the cream/vanilla mixture.  This will bubble like crazy, so don't pour the whole thing in! Continue to slowly add the rest of the cream. Stir it until smooth.
5. Stir in butter and salt. Taste and add more salt if desired. Pour into glass jar to cool. Makes approximately 2 cups.
The final step is the best: Take out a spoon and have a bite! And by the way, this makes a great holiday gift...so enjoy your own batch now, then whip up another soon!

What do y'all think? Any caramel-lovers out there willing to try this?

DIY Tulle Fall Wreath

While getting crafty and perusing Pinterest, I came across a super cute fall wreath. Am I the only one who feels the need to have a wreath on their door for every holiday?
After following that pin I discovered the wreath was actually for sale on Etsy, and while I loved it, I could never bring myself to spend $55 on it. I knew with a couple of coupons I could make something similar on my kind of a budget. So I headed over to Joann's and was able to grab all this for just $17!

I used:
1 yard each of tulle in my favorite fall colors
Styrofoam Wreath form
Ribbon to match
Decorative accents
It was pretty simple, just took a little time. Cut all of your tulle into the desired width and length strips and tie around the wreath form. I recommend doubling or even tripling up on the tulle strips. This way you get good opaque coverage and the wreath form doesn't show through.
Add some of your favorite fall accents...
Attach ribbon to the back with a push pin, and you're done!
I really love the way this wreath turned out! I could easily see myself doing this again for different holidays with a few small adjustments!

Easy enough, right? If you make this, leave us a comment here or on Facebook and show us a photo!

Simple Strawberry Watermelon Mint Salad

Today I wanted to share a simple and refreshing (and easy!) salad. My sister-in-law first introduced this to us on vacation and again at a birthday party. So when we were trying to come up with our menu for our mint-themed party, this immediately came to mind.
Ingredients:
Watermelon
Strawberry
Fresh Mint (from your garden!)
Jalapenos (optional)

Directions:
Cut your watermelon and strawberries into bite size pieces, then chop up some fresh mint, just enough to add some flavor. If you want a kick, finely chop a jalapeno. (I don't add the jalapeno because we usually have kids eating it. )
See...isn't that easy!? Make it, and enjoy it!

Local Highlight + Giveaway: ComfyFeely {Handmade Children's Clothing & Blankets}

This week, we're featuring Debbie from ComfyFeely, a local shop that is all about comfort for little ones. Her lovely handmade items are made from top-quality 100% cotton fabrics that are bright and fun! What's more, she's found a great way to give back to the community through her shop, and we love that!
Tell us about yourself and your family.
It's just my husband Jerry and me these days. We raised two sons and now have a grandson! I like to think I live a cottagy lifestyle: I love homemaking in all the fun aspects, like flower arranging and baking, and I love my garden. I work as a homeschool consultant.

Tell us about your shop, ComfyFeely!
I make one of a kind baby clothes made from 100% cotton quilter fabrics. My kids always preferred smooth soft fabrics, as do I, so it really works for me.
Why and how did you get started selling?
Several young women influenced me as I saw the work they were doing and realized I missed creating things. I love color, so sewing baby clothes lets me have all of that I want, the most color for the time and effort. In November, my shop will be two years old.

What is unique about your items in your shop?
I make brightly colored easy wear, easy care items to help busy moms. My vision is baby in a onesie with a cute colorful pants or dress or jacket to slip on over. Many of them have vintage styling. I always think about comfort. I work with a few moms who help me get good sizing and fit and tell me what works and what needs tweaking.

What is your inspiration for creativity? For sewing, fabric mostly. When I look at fabric I see a completed item. Sometimes I buy fabric on great sales because I think it will work, and it does, but ideally I would love to only sew the items that create themselves in my mind. I look for lines. There are actually very few lines in clothing styles. I spend time looking at patterns to see what they do with the lines. I love whatever it is in me that causes me to love some looks and not others.

Something I couldn’t live without is...books! I usually read at least 2 books a week.

My top five faves this month are...Tazo chai tea, my van that just turned 16 years old, the last of the summer fruit (especially nectarines), helenium blooming in the garden, and the concept of fall. I can love fall in theory even with the heat.
We love that you've found a way to use ComfyFeely to give back! What are you doing, and how did this happen?
When I started I knew I wanted ComfyFeely to be a way to give back to the community. I thought Care Pregnancy Center of Tulare County was a good fit. It turned out they were praying for someone like me. Isn't that awesome? I make ComfyCovers, which is what I call my blankets, with a matching outfit for all the new parents who go through their parent education program. The proceeds from my shop go for fabric to make the Care Baby sets.

You can find ComfyFeely on Etsy and Facebook and can connect with Debbie at www.debbiefeely.com. See more of her sweet items on her ComfyFeely Pinterest board.

Have a custom order you'd like to request? Have a question? Email her at comfyfeely@gmail.com. (Be sure and ask about the local pick-up discount!)

Through the end of October, Debbie is giving all of our readers 20% off! Enter the code citrusandcream when checking out. And as if that isn't sweet enough, Debbie is giving away this adorable set of a handmade bonnet, bib, and booties! Enter the giveaway below!
